Meet the Summer Missionaries: Levi Tan

Levi lives in Greenville, SC and is a rising senior at Eastside High. He has three siblings-- a sister and two brothers-- of which he is the second oldest. Born in Indiana, Levi has since lived in Michigan, and, for the past ten years, SC. He currently attends Grace Church.

Levi came to know Jesus as his savior at a young age. “I was probably four or five years old. I grew up in a Christian family that brought me to church for as long as I can remember.” He had heard a lot about Jesus, but that age was when he started to realize that the Gospel applied to him, and that he hadn’t yet believed in Jesus, and was not a Christian. He remembers not being able to go to sleep, because he kept thinking about what Jesus had done, what that meant for him, and how he had done wrong things. He spoke with his parents about how he had done wrong, and asked them how he could have Jesus. They talked to him about how Jesus took the punishment for anyone who would believe in him, what that meant, and how Levi could believe. Levi prayed and asked Jesus to forgive him of his sins. “God started to change me more, and made me realize that I shouldn’t continue doing the wrong things I had been.”

Before he began attending Grace church, Levi attended Horizon Church. There he met Melissa Young, who was involved with Good News Clubs. She helped him set up an interview with CYIA. As he began this process, he prayed and asked God what He wanted him to do. He was encouraged to meet so many Christian people his age at pre-training. He saw that they wanted to get closer to God and help younger children to get to know Him. “That was something I wanted to be like. I’d always loved children, and I’d been saved at a young age. I knew that they for sure could get to know Christ, and I would love to have a part in that. So I decided to join.”

This is Levi’s third year serving with CYIA. His first year, he was very timid, and not very outgoing. He said it helped that a lot of the other people were outgoing, because at his middle school, he didn’t have a lot of Christian friends. He had seen people start to drift into the world’s view of pleasure and success, and it made him really sad. His first year made him realize that he could have friends who knew God, loved God, and wanted His will in their lives. It also helped him to start being able to better communicate.

Levi’s brother Job is also a CYIA summer missionary this year. Levi said it has been good to see Job grow closer to the Lord and other Christians.

During his free time, Levi enjoys rock climbing. In elementary school PE, Levi tried a wide variety of games. “I was relatively fast for my size, but there were larger people who were faster. As a small person, I wasn’t very good at basketball or football or the traditional guy sports. Around when I started high school, my older brother went to college where he was introduced to rock-climbing. When he came back, he introduced it to us.” Levi said being small was an advantage in itself because he doesn’t have as much weight to lift up. He also enjoys playing ultimate frisbee and spikeball, and his favorite animal is a narwal.

Please be praying for Levi and his team as they begin wrapping up for the summer. He said that with even fewer summer missionaries this year, there is a jump in responsibility because there are still a large amount of children at clubs. “With three people, it’s manageable but it’s definitely a lot harder to keep the kids under control and also just to make goody bags for them all.”

 

Meet the Summer Missionaries: Laura Partin

Laura is a native of Greenville, SC, and a recent high school graduate. Having been homeschooled kindergarten through 12th grade, she was a part of a co-op, which she said was a really cool experience. Her latter half of high school, she also took classes at North Greenville University, where she will begin attending in the fall. She is excited to be studying Digital Media, as it will give her the opportunity to serve in many types of capacities.

Laura trusted in Jesus as her Savior when she was 7 years old. As she has seen on many occasions in Good News Clubs, even young children are capable of understanding the Gospel. However, she said at that time, there was a lot she still did not understand. A few years later, when she was 10 years old, she attended a children’s camp with her church. “I wish I could remember exactly what the leader shared, but it just hit me, and I rededicated my life. It was at that point that I really started growing; knowing what my walk with Christ meant. And I am still growing!”

Laura’s journey with CEF and CYIA began over ten years ago. Her family hosted GNC clubs in their home for several years, and she and her siblings were all a part of it. Her oldest sister began serving as a Summer Missionary in 2008, her brother started in 2010, her other sister began in 2012, and Laura joined in 2015. “I saw how it was shaping them-- not only in growing them as followers, but also in everyday skills like public speaking, and it seemed like such a great program to be a part of.” She took a year off last summer, and thought she had perhaps completed her journey as a CYIA missionary. But God showed her He was not done with her here yet. “I’m really glad that He brought me back, and I am excited to see how God will use our whole team. I’ve already seen him at work so much!”

In her free time, Laura loves to craft. She is currently attempting to master weaving. She also enjoys drawing and painting. Another of her passions is coffee. “I love coffee, so I know every coffee shop in Greenville,” she said. “And several outside of Greenville.”

As Laura serves with her team this summer, pray that she and her teammates will remain encouraged, though they have a small team. She said it has been really cool to watch God use their team, but it’s hard not having a big community like there has been in the past. Pray that they find community in the few, as they continue to share the love of God with the boys and girls they serve.

Dear Prayer Partners,

 

In Jeremiah 33:3, Jesus says, "Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know." Our staff at CEF is grateful for your faithful intercession as together we call to the Lord on behalf of this ministry.

 

Praises:

  • We praise God for four teenagers committed to being summer missionaries. Last week we were at Columbia International University in Columbia, SC for a week of intensive training with other students from around the state. This week our staff is leading local training during the mornings and then supervising the summer missionaries in the afternoon as they teach the children in summer Good News Clubs. We will have the first week in July off and then clubs will resume for the remainder of July. 

 

Prayer Requests: 

  • Pray for the summer missionaries. Pray for their safety as they travel to clubs, for good health and daily stamina, for a spirit of oneness in Christ, for their own personal lives to be deeply enriched during our weekly Bible study, and for God to use the summer missionaries to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
  • Pray for the Summer Good News Clubs and ask God to prepare the hearts of the children to receive Him and to be discipled. 
  • Pray for our staff - specifically that God would provide strength, endurance, health, joy, and quietness in Him during these busy summer months of maintaining the office, mentoring the summer missionaries, and preparing for ministry in the upcoming school year.
  • Pray for additional churches to cast the vision to their congregations to partner with us for a Good News Club. Pray also for  additional community partners to provide additional volunteers and to support us financially. Continue to ask God to send out workers into his harvest field and convict more believers of His Word, "Even so it is not the will of your Father, which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish."

CYIA Summer Missionaries

CYIA™ (Christian Youth in Action) is the CEF summer program where high school and college age students (ages 16-22) are trained to conduct a Summer Good News Club. After two weeks of intensive training, these summer missionaries conduct three Summer Good News Clubs a day in Greenville, Anderson, Oconee, and Pickens counties during July.

These teens impact the lives of thousands of children, many for eternity. Meanwhile, their own spiritual lives are also dramatically changed as they discover how God has gifted them in areas of teaching and evangelism. Many will eventually go on to become educators, pastors and missionaries.

This year we have three summer missionaries: Laura Partin, Levi Tan, and Job Tan. Having completed their training, they have begun teaching in Summer Good News Clubs this week. Please continue lifting these, and the other summer volunteers in prayer as they serve children in the community this summer!

 

May Prayer Update

Dear Prayer Partners,

Ephesians 3:20-21 says, "Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever! Amen." Our God, who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, has brought a group of teens who will serve as summer missionaries with the ministry. We've had a day of training on how to share the Gospel and we're excited about this year's team. How we praise God for His faithfulness, His provision, and for the teens who will teach the children in summer Good News Clubs throughout the Upstate.

Praises:
We just completed the stats for this school year.  It has been a tremendous year of evangelizing and discipling children in a Good News Club in every elementary school where a principal gave us permission. Join us in praising God for...

- 117 school clubs in 99 elementary schools

- 19 community clubs

- 1,609 volunteers

-  8.915 children

-  1,014 salvations

  • We had our annual golf tournament on May 15th at The Cliffs at Keowee Falls. We praise God for golfers who played, for the many sponsors who supported the tournament financially, for the volunteers who served, and for the rain that held off until after the tournament! The money raised through this golf tournament will help meet the financial needs of the ministry.

 

Requests:
The summer missionaries will be going to Columbia International University in June with summer missionaries from all over South Carolina for a week of intense training. Pray for these teens to have tender hearts and that their lives would be inalterably changed as they reach children with the Gospel. Pray for our staff as we train and mentor the summer missionaries. Pray for our safety as we travel to club locations and for God to send many children to hear and receive the Gospel.

  • There are 5 principals who have not given us permission for a Good News Club to meet on the school campus. Those schools are as follows: Cherrydale, Crestview, Sara Collins, Skyland, and Westcliffe. We continue to ask you to pray specifically for all these schools.
  • Pray for our staff as we prepare for our annual fundraising banquet to be held on September 17th and 18th at Taylors FBC and September 20th at Covenant Baptist.
  • Pray that God will touch the hearts of those who are able to give financially to support CEF, for new donors, and for His wisdom as we make decisions. We trust God who owns "the cattle on a thousand hills" (Ps. 50:10) and His faithfulness to meet our needs.
  • Pray for Lisa Yerrick who will begin her internship as the Local Director of this chapter upon final approval of from the state office. We thank God for bringing the next leader for this District.

April Prayer Update

Dear Prayer Partners,

Thank you so much for your faithful prayers concerning the summer missionaries. Every summer seems to take a shape of its own, and this summer is going to be the same. There are 5 teens who have been accepted to work with CEF this summer, and I am encouraged by the group that has been called to share the Gospel with children. In addition to the teens, there are a number of adults who are going to fill-in as needed, so that we can reach as many children as possible.

Praises

  • Psalm 8: 1-2 says, "O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise...." In Greenville, Pickens, Anderson, and Oconee Counties, the Lord's name is praised by the children! At the end of March almost 9,000 children heard the Gospel in the Good News Club and there have been 989 salvations! Praise God for the children who have been reached with the Gospel and who received Jesus as their personal Savior.
  • Praise God for over 1,608 volunteers who served this past year in the Good News Club. God provided willing volunteers who attended trainings, prepared weekly, and served faithfully.
  • Praise God for the partnerships with local churches to adopt elementary schools. Through these churches, 99 elementary schools and 17 community centers had a Good News Club.

Requests

  • Pray God will show favor to us as we meet with more pastors concerning partnerships for the fall. Pray for additional volunteers who will seize this opportunity and commit to serving in the Good News Club.
  • Not all children are able to stay after school for a Good News Club and yet we know its God's will to reach all children. Sharing the Gospel with children who can't stay after school is one way this ministry can be expanded. Pray for us as we seek God's direction to reach more children in our community.
  • We met with all club coordinators and team leaders on April 10th to show our appreciation for their service this year and to provide the materials they will need for the fall. Pray God would give all club volunteers a time of rest and refreshment over the summer and a willing heart to serve for the 2017-2018 school year.
  • Pray for God's wisdom and guidance for the CEF staff as we schedule locations for summer Good News Clubs and mentor the summer missionaries. Please pray Philippians 1:9-10 "that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best..."
  • Pray for the CEF annual golf tournament to be held on April 24th at The Cliffs at Keowee Falls. Pray for people for a day that will honor God and praise Him for His provision financially.

March Prayer Update

Dear Prayer Partners,

James 5:16 says, "The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working." I know you believe in the power of prayer and I invite you to bow your head and heart to our Father for the following needs for this ministry.

Praises/Requests:

  • The Good News Clubs will end next week for this school year. Praise God for 99 schools and 17 community facilities that have a Good News Club! Pray thevolunteers will finish strong, the children who have not responded to the Gospel will do so, and those who have responded will continue to grow in their walk with Christ. Many parents will be invited to the last club for the year and will hear the Gospel as it is given. Pray the churches will reach out to the families who are unchurched and who have children attending the club.
  • Our staff is visiting clubs every afternoon to encourage the volunteers and to thank them for serving.   Pray the volunteers would be receptive to our mentoring as we offer suggestions to make the clubs more effective in teaching the children and the volunteers will desire to continue serving in the clubs this fall.
  • Pray for the six elementary schools that do not have a Good News Club. We continue to ask God to make a way for the door to be open in these schools. It is God's desire that "the little children come unto Me" and pray in faith that He will make a way for every school to have a club.
  • In April we will have an appreciation time for the Good News Club Coordinators and Team Leaders. This is also an opportunity to give the calendar and suggested changes for the next school year. There is still much work to do in the weeks ahead to prepare for this.
  • A staff member is in the process of scheduling summer clubs for the teens who will serve with the ministry.Please pray for favor with all aspects of the summer ministry.
  • The CEF Annual Golf Tournament will be on April 24th at The Cliffs at Keowee Falls. We have been blessed with a Golf Committee that is making this tournament better than ever, and we are thankful for a full tournament of 30 teams. Please pray for the final preparations and for a beautiful day of weather. We need volunteers, if you are able to serve. Please call the office at 292-5842 or reply to this email.
  • Please continue to pray for the Personnel Committee in their search for a new Director. Interviews should begin in early April.

January Prayer Update

Dear Prayer Partners,

Thank you so much for your prayers for this ministry.  We thank God for His Faithfulness and for those who intercede on our behalf.

Praises:

  • After a break over Christmas, our Good News Clubs have restarted.  Eighty-nine after-school Good News Clubs and 17 community Good News Clubs are meeting every week.  Over fifteen hundred volunteers are telling the "good news" of Jesus Christ to almost eight thousand children in these clubs! In the next 2 months, there will be eight after-school clubs restarting and several new community clubs.
  • CEF held a workshop for the volunteers in the Good News Clubs. We thank God for individuals who give of their time each week at club as well as their time to prepare themselves with additional training throughout the year.  Each year from mid-January through March, staff teaches a ten-week teacher training course titled Teaching Children Effectively, so that volunteers learn how to be more effective in their ministry with children. We have 12 volunteers currently taking this class.
  • For the past several years, CEF has been the recipient of a local challenge grant.  The grant is funded in two parts:  part of the grant is funded dollar for dollar for "new" money (not previously pledged) and part is funded $1 for each $2 received.  With this challenge grant, CEF received over $57,000 in the last 2 months of 2017.  We praise God for His provision, which enabled us to meet our budget goal.

Requests:

  • Pray for the children in our Good News Clubs. So many of them have no one who prays for them.
  • Pray God will open the doors for all public elementary schools to have a Good News Club, specifically for the 7 schools in Greenville County that do not have a Good News Club because principals won't give us permission to be on the school campus.  One principal is reconsidering this week, so please pray for favor!
  • Pray for the existing clubs.  Several clubs could increase the number of children who attend, but there aren't enough volunteers (1 adult for every 7 children).  We have a tremendous opportunity to share the Gospel with children and it takes a lot of volunteers!  We have almost 100 less volunteers serving this year than last year.
  • Pray for the Good News Spectacular, a one-day free community outreach event to be held at the TD Center on February 17th.  We are asking God to bring 7,500 people to this community event. Pray the Gospel will be presented with clarity and for salvations.
  • We are recruiting teenagers for our summer Christian Youth in Action ministry.  We have asked returning students to reapply by February 1st.  Also, we are beginning to secure locations for summer Good News Clubs.
  • The Golf Committee is soliciting sponsors and golfers for our tournament on April 24th at The Cliffs at Keowee Falls.  Pray that our shotgun start will be filled with golfers and that God will give us beautiful days to be outside. 
  • Pray for the personnel committee as they continue with their search for a new District Director.

November Prayer Update

Dear Prayer Partners,

      "Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.  For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations."   Psalm 100:4-5

Praises/Prayer Needs:

  • We praise God for the many prayer warriors who receive this prayer newsletter and pray for the ministry. "The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective."  James 5:16
  • We praise God for the 1,423 volunteers who have a heart for reaching 7,782 children with the "good news" each week.
  • We praise the Lord for the many changed lives...there are 230 children who received Christ as Lord and Savior in September and October!
  • We praise the Lord for the staff that He has provided for this CEF chapter.  We pray that we will continue to care for one another in a way that is pleasing to Him.
  • We praise the Lord for the finances to support the growing ministry of CEF.
  • We praise God for the 97 elementary schools in our chapter that will have a Good News Club.  Pray for Good News Clubs to be established in every school in our chapter.  There are still 9 schools where we need the principal's permission. Pray that the doors to the public schools would stay open and that we would be diligent to go through those doors.
  • We praise God for the 17 community clubs in our chapter that have a Good News Club. Pray for those workers who are sharing the Gospel with children, many who are not able to stay after school for club.  Pray for a way to open more community clubs.
  • We praise God for the foundational work being done to plan the third annual Good News Spectacular to be held at the TD Center in February for children and their families in this community.  Pray for salvations through this event and for lives to be changed.
  • We praise the Lord that He has faithfully gone ahead of us in the past and for the confidence we have that He will continually go before us in the future.  Pray for wisdom and direction for the Board as they search for a new District Director to lead this chapter.

      We have so much to be thankful for during this Thanksgiving Season. We are thankful most of all for God's love and grace poured out on us through Christ Jesus. We are thankful for His wonderful message of salvation and that we are able to share it with thousands of children every week in Good News Clubs. We are very thankful for your prayers as you intercede for the ministry.

September Prayer Update

Dear Prayer Partners,

"Look at the nations and watch-and be utterly amazed.  For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told." Habakkuk 1:5   We worship and serve a great God and we are teaching this to the children in our Good News Clubs.  Children of all ages need this focus!

Praises:

  • Most of our Good News Clubs started in the past two weeks.  We are planning for 95 after-school Good News Clubs and 20 community Good News Clubs this school year. 
  • We begin this school year teaching a series to the children on "God's Faithfulness Return to Canaan".   Before volunteers teach the children, they are trained.  We praise God for over 400 volunteers who came for training in August.
  • God has given us an open door at a previously closed school!!!  We hope to start this Good News Club in October.

 Requests:

  • Pray that God will continue to protect His work in the Good News Clubs.  We believe God wants children to hear the "good news" and receive Jesus Christ as their Savior.
  • Several clubs have volunteer needs.
  • The fundraising banquets were held this week.  We did not meet our banquet financial goal, but we are thanking God for His faithfulness and believing God in faith that He will meet our every need.
  • Pray for all the components of the website www.worduptime.com and the impact it will have in this community to reach children and their families with the Gospel. 
  • Pray also for the new GROW Up booklet, a discipleship tool our office has written for children who make a salvation decision.  Pray for God's favor from our National office for this booklet to be used around the world and translated in other languages.  There is a booklet for a child, a leader, and a parent.  For more info, please contact our office.
  • Pray for the schools where we do not have access for a Good News Club.

August Prayer Update

Dear Prayer Partners,

"Give thanks to the Lord, call on His name; make known among the nations what He has done.  Sing to Him, sing praise to Him, tell of all His wonderful acts.  Glory in His holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.  Look to the Lord and His strength; seek His face always.  Remember the wonders He has done...."  1 Chronicles 16: 8-12a.

As a CEF prayer partner, each month we share our praises and requests with you.  We "give thanks to the Lord" and "sing praise to Him" and "tell of all His wonderful acts".   He is Faithful!   Please join us as we "seek His face".   

Praises/Requests:

  • We are planning for 95 school Good News Clubs and 20 community Good News Clubs for this school year. Please pray for over 1700 volunteers who will be sharing the Gospel weekly with precious children! 
  • Several of our churches have asked us to pray for additional volunteers to serve in the Good News Clubs.   Specifically, we have four school clubs who do not have a sponsoring church to restart at this time.  This need is a great concern for our staff, for the children who have attended the club in the past, and for the school relationship.
  • There are new community clubs who are partnering with us to share the Gospel with children.  As we reach our goal of having a Good News Club in every school with principal permission, community clubs are another tremendous opportunity to reach children.  We have requests for many community clubs, such as recreational centers or daycares, who offer after-school care and who want a Good News Club.  Pray for the Lord of the harvest to send the workers.  We are continuously looking at all options to expand our ministry, and we seek God's wisdom and direction.
  • There are 9 schools in Greenville County where the principals will not give permission for us to have a Good News Club on the school campus.
  • We will have our first workshop on August 26th for the Good News Club volunteers, who will be encouraged and equipped for the year ahead.  Please pray for us as we finalize many details for the workshop.
  • The CEF fundraising banquet is September 18th and 19th at Taylors First Baptist (Greenville County) and September 21st at Covenant Baptist (Anderson County). There are still so many details to prepare for this event, but we serve a God of order, and we know our details are small in His hand.  Pray we will receive the finances to meet our 2018 budget.

July Prayer Update

Dear Prayer Partners,

     Our staff is grateful for your faithful intercession. Thank you for faithfully bringing the needs of the Good News Clubs and the children before God's throne. As I write this prayer letter, I know our hearts are joined through God's Word which says, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus." (Phil. 4:6-7)

Praise/Prayer Requests:

  • We praise God for the wonderful group of teens as they share the Gospel in summer Good News Clubs.  Many children have responded to hearing the message of salvation and hundreds of children have been discipled.  Continue to pray for the summer missionaries' as they complete their work at the end of this week.
  • We praise God for the meetings with principals to restart the Good News Clubs this fall.  We've had a large number of principal and church changes, so be in prayer for a time of transition for all. Pray for our staff as we prepare for the first Good News Club workshop on August 26th.  We are asking every volunteer to come to this workshop and anticipate that we'll have hundreds of volunteers to attend.
  • Please also pray for the annual fundraising banquet which is September 18th and September 19th at Taylors First Baptist with George Barna, who has been hailed as "the most quoted person in the Christian Church today" and has been named by various media as one of the nation's most influential Christian leaders. Mr. Barna has written more than 50 books, mostly addressing cultural and religious trends, leadership, and spiritual development. This year we are also offering a third banquet on September 21st at Covenant Baptist in Anderson with Tommy Bowden, former football coach for Clemson University. Each banquet will be identical with tremendous keynote speakers. We are asking God to provide the finances for 2018 at this year's banquet.  We pray with thankful hearts for the many opportunities we have in front of us, and our heart's desire is for God to be glorified in all we do.
